Why It Matters
An old Beetle door seal goes hard, shrinks and cracks. The results are wind noise at highway speed, rain water on the floor and under the rear seat (where it rusts the heater channels and floor pans), cold drafts in winter, and doors that rattle. A fresh seal fills the gap between door and body, so the doors close with a solid thunk and the cabin stays dry. New seals are thicker than the flattened originals, so the door will feel tight to close at first; that is normal and eases as the rubber settles.
Installation Notes
- Pull the old seal and scrape off old glue and rust; treat any rust before fitting.
- Dry-fit the seal starting at the bottom center of the opening and work round both ways.
- Use a weatherstrip adhesive on the channel, and do not stretch the rubber into place.
- Leave the door shut overnight, then readjust the striker if the door is hard to latch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1972 Super Beetle?
Yes, on the right door of a sedan.
Left or right — how do I tell?
This is the right side, the passenger door on a US car. The left seal is OE 111 831 721 D.
Is this the same as OE 111 831 722 D?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-8698-0 to 111 831 722 D.
Will it fit my convertible?
We have not confirmed it. Convertibles normally use a different seal.
My door is hard to close after fitting. Is that normal?
Yes, a new seal is thicker. Let it settle for a few days, then adjust the striker if needed.
Is it new?
Yes, a new JP Group part.
