Short answer: JP Group JP-8535-0 and JP-8536-0 are the window scrapers (belt seals) that wipe the front door glass of the VW Vanagon. One part does two jobs: JP-8535-0 (OE 251 837 703) fits left outer or right inner, and JP-8536-0 (OE 251 837 704) fits right outer or left inner. EMPI also lists the 1975–1984 Rabbit, 1980–1983 Rabbit Pickup and 1980–1984 Jetta. Sold each.

Fitment comes from EMPI, the US distributor for JP Group, checked against the OE numbers. EMPI's Fits list is cut off on its site, so Rabbit Convertible and Scirocco are not confirmed. Heritage Parts Centre lists 251 837 703 for the Vanagon 1980–1992, Golf Mk1, Caddy Mk1 and Jetta, and notes that the strip must be shortened on Mk1 Golf, Jetta and Caddy.

Why It Matters
The scrapers sit along the top of the door, inside and outside the glass. When the felt wears off and the rubber cracks, rain runs straight into the door, rusts the bottom of the door shell and soaks the door card; the glass also rattles and gets scratched. Vanagon doors are notorious for rusting along the bottom seam, and fresh scrapers are the cheapest way to keep water out.
How to order a full set: for both front doors you need two JP-8535-0 (left outer + right inner) and two JP-8536-0 (right outer + left inner).
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic and later Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Lower the glass. Outer scrapers pry off the door flange; inner scrapers need the door card removed.
- Remove the old clips; fit new ones if the old ones break.
- On Rabbit, Jetta and Rabbit Pickup doors, trim the strip to length before fitting.
- Press the scraper on evenly and run the glass up and down to check it slides freely.
