JP Group Engine Compartment Foam Seal (Tinware to Body) | VW Bus 1972–1979 & Type 4 411/412 | OE 411 813 225 (JP-8510-0)
Short answer: JP Group JP-8510-0 is the thick foam seal that closes the gap between the engine tinware and the body around the engine bay of the 1972–1979 VW Bay Window Bus and Pickup, and the 1971–1974 VW 411/412. It keeps hot engine air from being drawn back into the cooling fan. It replaces OE 411 813 225, JP Group reference 8185500500. Sold each.

Why It Matters
On a 1972-on Bus the cooling fan pulls air from the engine bay. The foam seal keeps the hot air that has just passed over the cylinders and the exhaust under the van from being drawn back up and through the fan. When the foam crumbles or goes missing, the engine breathes its own hot air and road dirt, and head temperatures rise. On a Type 4 engine that already runs hot, this cheap seal is one of the first things to check when temperatures climb.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- The seal is easiest to fit with the engine out, but it can be done with the engine in by working from below.
- Scrape off every bit of the old foam and clean the tinware edge.
- Fit the seal around the tinware so it compresses against the body when the engine is in place, with no gaps at the corners.
- Check from below with a light that the seal touches the body all the way round.
