JP Group Engine Compartment Seal, Lower (Body to Engine Tin) | VW Beetle 1967–1979, Super Beetle, Karmann Ghia 1967–1974 & Thing | OE 111 813 705 D (JP-8526-0)
Short answer: JP Group JP-8526-0 is the rubber seal that runs around the engine compartment and seals the body to the rear engine tinware, so the cooling fan breathes clean cool air instead of hot air from under the car. EMPI lists the 1971–1980 Super Beetle, 1967–1974 Karmann Ghia and 1973–1974 Thing. It replaces OE 111 813 705 D, JP Group reference 8185800400. Sold each.

Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1971–1980 | VW Super Beetle | Engine compartment, rear. EMPI fitment |
| 1967–1974 | VW Karmann Ghia | Engine compartment, rear. EMPI fitment |
| 1973–1974 | VW Thing (Type 181) | EMPI fitment |
| 1967–1979 | VW Beetle (standard) | Fitment to confirm: EMPI's list is cut off, but the OE number 111 813 705 D is listed for the 1967–1979 Beetle by Heritage and Mid America. Some 1975–1979 cars use the later seal 133 813 705 |
| 1966 and earlier | Beetle / Ghia | Does not fit: earlier engine bay seal |
| Any | Bus | Does not fit |
Fitment comes from EMPI, the US distributor for JP Group, checked against the OE number. EMPI calls this the "lower" engine compartment seal because it sits at the base of the engine bay, between the body and the rear engine tin.

Why It Matters
An air-cooled VW engine is cooled by a fan that pulls air from the engine bay. This seal divides the clean, cool air above the engine from the hot air and exhaust below it. When the rubber cracks, hardens or is missing, the fan draws hot air and road dirt back in, and the engine runs hotter than it should. It is one of the cheapest fixes for an engine that overheats in summer traffic, and a missing seal is one of the most common faults found on cars that have had the engine out.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Fit it with the engine out if you can; it is much easier.
- Clean the body flange of old rubber and dirt.
- Press the seal onto the flange so its lip faces the engine tin and will be compressed when the engine goes in.
- After the engine is in, check from below that the tin meets the seal all the way across with no gaps.
