What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one tail pipe.
- Not included: tail pipe gasket (025 251 235 type for Type 4 and Vanagon), bolts or clamp, muffler.
Why It Matters
On the Bus and Vanagon the tail pipe bolts to a flange on the muffler with a gasket. When the flange rusts away or the pipe cracks, the exhaust leaks right under the rear of the van and blows exhaust under the bumper and into the engine bay, where the cooling fan can draw it in. A loose tail pipe also rattles against the valance. A new pipe and gasket stop the leak and noise.
Installation Notes
- Soak the flange bolts with penetrating oil. They often snap, so have new bolts ready.
- Clean the muffler flange face flat and use a new tail pipe gasket.
- Tighten the bolts evenly so the flange pulls down square, then check clearance to the bumper and valance.
- Run the engine and check for leaks at the flange once it is hot.
