Why It Matters
Passat B4 exterior handles are known for breaking at the pivot or the internal lever, which leaves the handle flapping or the door impossible to open from outside. The plastic also fades and chalks in the sun. A new handle fixes the door and the appearance in one go. Because this one comes with its own lock cylinder and keys, it is also the fix when the cylinder has been damaged in a break-in attempt. Note that the new cylinder will have a different key from your ignition; many owners re-pin the new cylinder to their original key or keep the passenger side on its own key.
Installation Notes
- Remove the interior door panel and the vapor barrier carefully, so it can be re-sealed.
- Disconnect the lock rods from the handle and the cylinder, noting the position of each clip.
- Remove the handle mounting fasteners and slide the old handle out.
- Install the new handle, reconnect the rods and test the handle, the key and the central locking several times with the door open before you refit the panel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1996 Passat GLX?
Yes, front right, if the car has central locking. The B4 sedan and wagon use 3A0 837 208 C.
Left or right — how do I tell?
Right is the passenger side on a US car. This handle is for the front right door only.
Is this the same as OE 3A0 837 208 C?
Yes. EMPI and JP Group cross-reference JP-3169-0 to VW 3A0 837 208 C.
Will the keys match my ignition key?
No. The lock cylinder comes with its own keys. A locksmith can re-pin it to your original key.
Is it new?
Yes, a new JP Group handle.
What else do I need?
Usually nothing. Replace broken rod clips while the door panel is off.
