Why It Matters
The front cab steps are one of the classic Vanagon rust spots. Water and dirt come in with every door opening, sit behind the step rubber, and rot the step from the inside out. Left alone the rot spreads into the door pillar, the wheel arch and the floor, and it lets water and road noise into the cab.
A pressed repair panel is far quicker and stronger than shaping patches by hand, and it keeps the original step shape so the rubber and door seal sit correctly. JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic and later Volkswagens, sold in the US through EMPI. Washburn's Metal in Orange, CA lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP reference so you can check it against your old part before you order.
Installation Notes
- This is a weld-in panel. Fit it in a body shop or with MIG or spot-weld equipment.
- Remove the step rubber and cut out only the rotten metal. Trial-fit the panel and mark the cut line before cutting.
- Treat any rust behind the panel and use weld-through primer on the joining flanges.
- Tack, check the door gap and step shape, then finish the weld and seal every seam.
- Prime, seam-seal and paint, and use cavity wax inside the step box before refitting the rubber.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1985 Vanagon?
Yes. EMPI lists both panels for the 1980–1991 Vanagon.
Left or right — how do I tell?
Left is the driver side on a US van. JP-3220-0 is left (955732-3), JP-3221-0 is right (955732-4).
Is this the inner or the outer step?
These are the inner sections. The outer step repair is a different JP panel (955732-1 / -2).
Is 955732-3 a VW part number?
No. It is the repair-panel reference EMPI lists. VW sells the step as part of larger panels.
Is it a bolt-on part?
No. It must be welded in.
Does it fit a Westfalia or Syncro?
Yes. The cab steps are the same on all 1980–1991 Vanagons.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group steel.
