Short answer: JP Group JP-8576-0 is the OE-version check rod (door stop strap) for the front cab doors. It holds the door open and stops it over-swinging. EMPI lists it for the 1976–1979 VW Bus and the 1980–1991 Vanagon, left or right. OE 251 837 249; JP ref. 8189810200. Sold each.

What's Included

  • One door check rod.

Not Included

  • Check rod pin (OE 211 837 257 B), bolts or door panel clips.

Why It Matters

The check rod links the door to the body pillar and gives the door its open stops. When the rod or its rollers wear, the door swings wide open, will not stay open on a hill or in the wind, and can hit the front fender. A broken check rod also strains the hinges. A new rod brings back firm, safe door stops.

JP Group is a Danish supplier that has specialised in classic Volkswagen and Porsche parts for decades, and EMPI distributes the range in the USA. Their parts are made to match the original design, so they fit without the guesswork that comes with generic replacements.

Installation Notes

  • Remove the door panel to reach the check rod mounting inside the door.
  • Drive out the pin at the body end, then remove the bolts inside the door and pull the rod out.
  • Grease the new rod and fit it in reverse order. A new pin is a good idea if the old one is worn.
  • Check that the door holds at each stop.
  • Follow the factory workshop manual (Bentley or VW) for your model. If in doubt, have a qualified mechanic fit the part.
