Why It Matters
The lock plate sits between the inner adjusting nut and the outer lock nut on the spindle. Its tabs are bent over to lock the nuts. An old plate that has been bent back and forth can crack, and then the nuts can loosen and the bearing goes out of adjustment.
Always fit a new plate when you repack or adjust the front wheel bearings. EMPI's description also mentions the 914, but the 914 does not use a link-pin front end; we list it by the fitment EMPI gives.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model, chassis number and engine code and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Set wheel bearing play with the inner nut as the service manual says.
- Fit the new lock plate, then the outer nut.
- Bend the tabs over the flats of both nuts.
- Check the wheel spins freely with no play.
Use the torque values and procedures in a factory or Bentley service manual for your car.
