Why It Matters
Mk1 and Mk2 VW outside door handles take a beating. The push-button sticks or breaks inside, the plastic body cracks and fades, and the lock cylinder wears until the key spins or will not turn at all. Common symptoms are a button that does nothing, a door that only opens from the inside, a key that will not unlock the driver's door, or a handle that has gone grey and chalky. A new handle with its own lock and keys is the quickest fix, and it makes the car look fresher too. Many owners keep a separate key for the door, or have a locksmith re-pin the new cylinder to match their ignition key.
Installation Notes
- Remove the door card and the plastic vapor barrier for access to the handle mounting screws and the lock rod.
- Note how the lock and push-button rods attach before you take the old handle off.
- Fit the new handle with its gaskets so water stays out, and adjust the button play so the latch releases cleanly.
- Test the outside handle, the lock and the inside release several times before refitting the door card.
- If you want one key for everything, have a locksmith re-key the new cylinder to your ignition key.
