Why It Matters
The vent wing seal on a Vanagon is the usual source of wind whistle at highway speed and of water dripping onto the dash or the passenger's knee in rain. The rubber shrinks and cracks after decades of sun, especially on the corner by the mirror. A new seal quiets the cab and keeps water out of the door and off the dash wiring.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic and later Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Open the vent wing and pull the old seal out of its channel, noting how the corners sit.
- Clean the channel of old rubber and dirt.
- Press the new seal in starting at a corner, working round evenly so it is not stretched.
- Close the vent and check it seals all round with no gaps or binding.
