What's Included
- One right front wheel arch panel, steel.
Not Included
- Left side panel
- Inner arch or support structure, if separate
- Wheel arch trim / flares (the Syncro 16-inch trim is a separate part)
- Primer, paint, seam sealer and welding supplies
Why It Matters
Vanagon front arches trap mud, salt and water behind the wheel, and Syncros that have done real off-road or winter work rust there first. Rot typically starts at the lower rear corner of the arch and the seam to the door step, then spreads into the step and floor. Once you can push a screwdriver through, patching with flat sheet rarely holds up or looks right. An O.E.-style shaped panel gives a correct arch profile and a proper flange for welding. Syncro panels are scarce because the Syncro arch is not the same as the 2WD arch.
Installation Notes
- This is a weld-in panel. It is a body shop or experienced DIY job.
- Test-fit the panel and mark your cut line before cutting. Leave yourself material to trim.
- Cut out all rusted metal back to solid steel, and treat the inner structure with rust converter and weld-through primer.
- Tack in place, check the door gap and arch line, then stitch-weld to avoid warping the panel.
- Seal the seams, prime, paint and apply cavity wax inside.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1989 Vanagon Syncro?
Yes. EMPI lists JP-3186-0 for 1985–1991 Vanagon Syncro, right front.
Will it fit my 2WD Vanagon?
No. The Syncro arch is different. For 2WD vans see JP-1282-0 or JP-1448-0.
Left or right — how do I tell?
Right is the passenger side on a US left-hand-drive van, the side with the sliding door.
Is this genuine VW 251 809 244 C?
No. It is a JP Group O.E.-style repair panel. The genuine VW complete arch is a different, special-order part.
Does it come painted?
No. It ships in bare or transit-primed steel and must be primed and painted after welding.
Is it new?
Yes, a new JP Group panel.
Why is shipping expensive?
The carton is about 49 inches long, so it ships as an oversize package.
