Why It Matters
From 1968 the Beetle got an external fuel filler on the right front fender. When you fill the tank, air in the tank has to escape through the vent system, and this hose is part of that path. If the vent hose cracks, the Beetle will smell of fuel in the front trunk and the cabin, especially after filling or on hot days, and fuel vapor can collect right in front of the driver. If the hose collapses or is kinked, the tank cannot vent, so the pump nozzle keeps clicking off and fuel can spit back out of the filler. A fresh vent hose is a simple and inexpensive cure for both problems.
Installation Notes
- Work with the tank less than half full and the battery disconnected. Open the front trunk and remove the trunk liner to reach the filler area.
- Note the routing of all vent hoses before you take anything off.
- Remove the old hose and clean the fittings. A little soapy water helps the new hose slide on; do not use oil or grease.
- Fit new clamps where the factory used them and make sure the hose does not kink or rub on the body.
- Fill the tank and check for fuel smell or wet spots at every joint.
Frequently Asked Questions

Probably, but EMPI lists only "Beetle". Compare length and diameter with your old hose.
Is this the filler neck hose?
No. This is the smaller vent hose. The large filler neck hose is a different part.
Can I use generic hose instead?
You can use fuel-rated hose of the same size, but this hose is cut to the factory length and is made for fuel vapor.
What size is it?
215 mm long, 15 mm inside diameter, 2.5 mm wall.
Is it new?
Yes. New, supplied by JP Group of Denmark through EMPI.
