JP Group Fuel Tank with Large 105 mm Filler Neck — VW Beetle 1953–1955 Oval Window (JP-8139-0)
Short answer: JP-8139-0 is a new steel fuel tank for the early oval-window VW Beetle, made with the original large 105 mm filler neck that takes the big early fuel cap. EMPI lists it for the 1953–1955 Beetle (front-mounted tank). It replaces the factory 1953–1955 tank, VW 111 201 075. JP Group reference 8115601000. Sold each, without cap or sending unit.
Part numbers: JP-8139-0 · JP Group 8115601000 · EMPI OE ref 950800-0 · VW 111 201 075 (1953–1955 tank) · UPC 707924524741.
Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1953–1955 | VW Beetle sedan and convertible (oval window) | Per EMPI; front trunk tank with large 105 mm filler |
| 1953–1955 | VW Beetle with 60 mm (late-style) cap conversion | Does not fit as-is — this tank keeps the original large neck; for a 60 mm cap choose a 60 mm-neck tank |
| 1956–1960 | VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia | Does not fit — the 1956–60 tank has an 80 mm neck and a different shape |
| 1950–1952 | VW Split Window Beetle | Fitment to confirm — early split tanks vary; compare with your tank |
| Any | Karmann Ghia, Bus | Does not fit |
Fitment note: EMPI's title for this part reads "Late Beetle" and "Early Beetle" at the same time, but its fitment data lists 1953–1955 only. Measure your filler opening (about 105 mm across for the original large cap) before ordering.

What's Included
- One new steel fuel tank.
Not Included
- Large fuel cap and cap seal
- Fuel tap (petcock), outlet strainer and fuel line
- Sending unit (oval Beetles use a reserve tap, not a gauge, in many markets)
- Tank-to-body seal, straps and hold-down bolts
Why It Matters
Oval-window Beetles are now valuable cars, and the original tanks are seventy years old. They rust inside, shed scale into the fuel tap and carburetor and often pinhole along the seams, which puts fuel in the front trunk. Many replacement tanks for these cars are made with the later 60 mm neck, which means the original large cap will not fit and the car no longer looks correct. This tank keeps the large 105 mm filler, so you can use the correct early cap and keep the trunk looking original while getting a clean, leak-free tank.
Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and work away from any flame or spark. Drain the old tank fully.
- Remove the fuel line, fuel tap and the tank hold-downs, then lift the tank out of the front trunk.
- Flush the new tank before fitting if it was shipped with a rust-preventive coating.
- Fit a new tank-to-body seal and a new fuel tap gasket and strainer. Use new ethanol-rated fuel hose and clamps.
- Fill a few liters first and check for leaks at the tap and every joint before filling completely.
