JP Group Fuel Tank, 40 L Steel — VW Super Beetle 1971–1974 Carbureted (JP-8136-0)
Short answer: JP-8136-0 is a new steel replacement fuel tank for the carbureted VW Super Beetle (1302 and 1303), 1971–1974. EMPI lists it for 1970–1974 Beetles and cross-references it to VW OE 133 201 075 F (JP Group ref 8115600301). The tank holds about 40 liters (10.6 US gallons). It mounts in the front trunk and is sold each, without the sending unit or cap.
Part numbers: JP-8136-0 · OE 133 201 075 F · JP Group 8115600301 · UPC 707924524710 · also cross-listed by Mid America with EMPI 95-2002-B / 95-2003-B.
Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1971–1974 | VW Super Beetle (1302 / 1303), carbureted | Per EMPI (listed 1970–1974 Beetle) and OE 133 201 075 F |
| 1973–1974 | VW Super Beetle Convertible, carbureted | Same tank family |
| 1975–1979 | VW Super Beetle / Convertible, fuel injected | Does not fit — injected cars use the dual-port return tank 133 201 075 G |
| 1968–1977 | VW Standard Beetle (torsion bar front) | Does not fit — Standard Beetles use the 113 201 075 tank family |
| Any | Karmann Ghia, Type 3, Bus | Does not fit |
How to tell: A Super Beetle has MacPherson strut front suspension and a curved or flat windshield with a larger front trunk. If your car has torsion bars across the front beam, it is a Standard Beetle and needs a different tank.

Why It Matters
Fifty-year-old Super Beetle tanks rust from the inside. The flakes clog the outlet strainer, the fuel filter and the carburetor jets, which causes stalling, surging and engines that die after a few miles. Many tanks also rust through along the bottom seam or under the old tar seal and start to weep fuel into the trunk, which is a real fire risk right in front of the driver. Cleaning and coating an old tank sometimes works, but a new tank is the reliable fix when it is pitted or leaking. Fit a new sending unit seal and fresh hoses at the same time.
Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and work in a well-ventilated area, away from any flame or spark.
- Drain the old tank, then disconnect the fuel line, sending unit wire, filler hose and vent hoses.
- Clean the new tank interior if it was shipped with a rust-preventive coating (Mid America notes this for the 133 201 075 F type), and flush it before filling.
- Fit a new tank-to-body seal and the tank straps, transfer or replace the sending unit with a new seal, and use new ethanol-rated hoses and clamps.
- Fill a few gallons first and check every connection for leaks before filling completely.
