What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one headlight surround repair section for the side you select.
- Not included: headlight bucket (bowl), headlight, trim ring, the opposite side or paint.
Why It Matters
The Karmann Ghia front fender wraps around the headlight in a deep, hand-finished curve. Water, mud and salt collect behind the headlight bucket, and the metal around the light rots out from the back. The usual signs are bubbles around the headlight rim, a loose headlight that will not stay aimed, and holes visible when the light is removed.
Ghia front fenders are welded to the body, so you cannot unbolt and replace them like on a Beetle. A pre-formed headlight section lets a body shop cut out only the rotten area and weld in fresh metal with the correct curve, saving a lot of hand-forming and lead work.
The Ghia nose is one of the most visible parts of the car, so careful fitting before welding pays off.
Installation Notes
- This is a weld-in steel panel. It is a job for a body shop or a welder with sheet-metal experience.
- Offer the panel up before you cut anything. Mark the cut line inside sound metal and remove only the rotten section.
- Repair panels usually need some trimming and dressing to fit. Check shape and gaps against the opposite side of the car before tacking.
- Remove the transit coating at the weld zones, use weld-through primer on the joints, tack in place, then stitch-weld in short runs to limit heat warping.
- Seal seams, prime, apply cavity wax to the inside faces and finish with paint and underbody coating.
- Fit the headlight bucket and trim ring during test fitting to check the opening and the gap around the ring before final welding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1967 Karmann Ghia?
Yes. The 1960–1974 Type 14 coupe and convertible are the confirmed fit.
Does it fit a 1958 lowlight Ghia?
Not confirmed. EMPI lists 1955 on, but lowlight cars have a different nose. Compare the panel with your car first.
Left or right — how do I tell?
Left is the driver side on a US car (JP-8440-0). Right is the passenger side (JP-8441-0).
Is there a VW part number?
The references are JP 8182000570 / 8182000580 and panel 40421-1 / 40421-2. Other suppliers sell similar panels as 141 404 211 / 212.
