Why It Matters
On a Karmann Ghia the heat from the engine travels forward through the heater channels in the sills and exits into the front footwells. At the front end of each channel a short steel connecting pipe carries the warm air through to the footwell outlet. It sits low, collects water and is usually found rotted away when the floor or heater channel is opened up.
If the connecting pipe is gone you lose cabin heat and defrost, and exhaust smells and road dirt can enter the cabin. Replacing it during heater channel or floor pan work restores proper heat flow and closes a hidden rust hole in the structure.
The Ghia heater channel is a structural part of the car. Repair this area properly with welded steel, not filler.
Installation Notes
- This is a weld-in steel panel. It is a job for a body shop or a welder with sheet-metal experience.
- Offer the panel up before you cut anything. Mark the cut line inside sound metal and remove only the rotten section.
- Repair panels usually need some trimming and dressing to fit. Check shape and gaps against the opposite side of the car before tacking.
- Remove the transit coating at the weld zones, use weld-through primer on the joints, tack in place, then stitch-weld in short runs to limit heat warping.
- Seal seams, prime, apply cavity wax to the inside faces and finish with paint and underbody coating.
- Fit this pipe together with the heater channel and floor pan repair so the duct lines up with the footwell outlet.
