Why It Matters
The oil pump is the only thing between your bearings and dry metal. Air-cooled VW pumps wear inside: the gears and housing score, the cover plate wears a groove and the pump loses pressure, especially when the oil is hot at idle. The usual signs are an oil light that flickers at hot idle, low readings on a pressure gauge and noisy lifters. A worn pump also loses its prime more easily after an oil change. The 26 mm heavy-duty pump moves more oil than the stock 21 mm pump, so it is a good choice for a rebuilt or slightly hotter stock 1600. Always pick the right cam style: a dished-cam pump on a flat cam (or the reverse) will not drive correctly.
Installation Notes
- Check your cam gear first. Dished-face cams have a concave face at the pump drive slot; flat cams do not.
- The pump body can be fitted with the engine assembled, but the case must be clean and the mating face flat.
- Fill the pump with clean engine oil or assembly lube before fitting so it primes on first start.
- Fit the new gasket, tighten the 8 mm nuts evenly to the factory specification in the Bentley manual and do not over-tighten, which can bind the gears.
- Spin the engine with the coil disconnected until the oil light goes out before starting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1973 Super Beetle?
Yes, if it still has the original dished-cam 1600 engine. Confirm your cam style and stud size before ordering.
Dished cam or flat cam — how do I tell?
Look at the end of the camshaft where the pump drive tang sits. A dished cam has a concave face. A flat cam, used through 1970 and on most aftermarket cams, has a flat face.
Is this the same as OE 111 115 107 BK?
Yes. EMPI and JP Group cross-reference JP-8126-0 to 111 115 107 BK.
8 mm or 6 mm studs?
This pump is for 8 mm studs. Earlier engines with 6 mm studs need a different pump or stepped studs.
Is it a full-flow pump?
No. It is a stock-style heavy-duty pump. Full-flow filter systems need a different cover.
Is it new or rebuilt?
New, supplied by JP Group of Denmark through EMPI.
