What's Included
- One ignition points set (contact set)
Not Included
- Condenser, rotor and distributor cap
- Cam lube
Why It Matters
Points wear every time they open and close. As the rubbing block wears, the gap closes and the timing retards; as the contacts pit, the spark weakens. You get hard starting, a rough idle, misfires under load and poor fuel economy. Points should be checked every tune-up and replaced roughly every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. They are cheap, so many owners keep a spare set in the glovebox.
Installation Notes
- Compare the new set with your old points before installing: base shape, pivot and wire connection must match.
- Clean the breaker plate and apply a small amount of cam lube to the distributor cam.
- Set the gap or dwell to the figure in your workshop manual, then set the ignition timing.
- Recheck dwell after the first few hundred miles while the rubbing block beds in.
- Replace the condenser at the same time if it is original or suspect.
