JP Group Ignition Timing Scale — Porsche 914 & VW Bus Type 4 (JP-8170-0)
The JP Group JP-8170-0 is the ignition timing scale, the small graduated degree plate that sits beside the crankshaft pulley or flywheel so you can read timing with a strobe light. What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one timing scale.
- Not included: mounting screws, timing light, TDC sensor.
Why It Matters
On the Type 4 engine you set ignition timing by lining the mark on the flywheel or pulley up with this scale. When the original scale is broken, painted over, missing after an engine rebuild or bent, you are guessing at timing. Wrong timing on an air-cooled Type 4 means pinging, poor power, overheating and burnt valves. A clean, readable scale makes a correct strobe timing check quick.
Installation Notes
- Fit the scale in the original position with the original screws and make sure it sits flat and does not touch moving parts.
- Confirm TDC on cylinder 1 before trusting any scale, especially after an engine rebuild or a flywheel change.
- Set timing to the spec on your engine's emissions decal or in the workshop manual for your engine code.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the JP-8170-0 fit my 1974 914 2.0?
Yes. EMPI lists the 1970–1976 914 with 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 engines.
Does it fit my 1978 Bus?
Very likely. US retailers list 021 119 249 for 1972–1979 Type 4 Buses. EMPI lists 1972–1976, so compare with your old scale.
Is this the same as 021 119 249 E?
Yes. EMPI lists 021 119 249 E as the OE reference.
