What's Included
- One valve of the type you choose.
Not Included
- Valve guides, springs, retainers or keepers
- Valve seals or head gaskets
- Machine work
Why It Matters
Air-cooled VW exhaust valves run very hot, especially in a Beetle with tired cooling tin or a lean carb. Burnt or cracked valves cause low compression, a miss and rough running. A dropped valve head will wreck the piston and cylinder head.
When a head is rebuilt, the valves are replaced along with the guides. Getting the right head diameter and stem size for your head is the key step. These JP Group valves use the stock 3-groove keepers, so stock springs and retainers fit.
Installation Notes
- Valve work needs a machine shop or the right tools to check guides and cut seats.
- Measure your old valve head and stem before you order.
- Lap or cut the seats so the new valve seals fully.
- Use new keepers if the old ones are worn.
- Set valve lash to the factory figure after assembly and recheck after the first run-in.
- We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual (Bentley) for your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which valve do I need for my 1600 dual port?
The 35.5 mm intake JP-8652-0. For exhaust, check your stem size: most 1600s use 32 mm exhaust valves.
Does the 30 mm exhaust fit my 1965 Beetle?
Yes. EMPI lists JP-8654-0 for the 1960–1966 Beetle and Ghia 1200/1300.
Are these 8 mm or 9 mm stems?
EMPI does not say. By OE number, 113 109 612 is 8 mm and 043 109 612 is 9 mm. Measure yours first.
How many do I need?
Four intake and four exhaust per engine. Each listing is one valve.
Is this the same as VW 311 109 601?
JP-8652-0 is the JP Group replacement listed against OE 311 109 601.
Do they fit a Type 4 Bus engine?
No.
Are they new?
Yes. New, from JP Group of Denmark, sold through EMPI.
