Why It Matters
The air-cooled VW runs its valves hot, and the number 3 exhaust valve is the classic failure. A burnt or stretched valve shows up as a low compression reading on one cylinder, a miss at idle, popping back through the carburetor or a tick that will not adjust out. A valve that drops its head will destroy the piston and the head. When a head is apart for guides or a valve job, new valves are cheap insurance. The early 25/36 hp engines use single-groove keepers, and good replacement valves for those engines are getting hard to find.
Installation Notes
- Match the keeper style: single-groove valves need single-groove keepers, and three-groove valves need three-groove keepers. Never mix them.
- Check guide wear before fitting new valves. A new valve in a worn guide will not last.
- Have the seats cut or lap each valve to its seat, then check the seal with solvent.
- Set valve lash cold to the specification for your engine (see the Bentley manual or the sticker on your fan shroud) and re-check after the first few hundred miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which valve fits my 1958 Beetle?
A 36 hp engine uses the 30 mm intake JP-8114-0 and the 28.5 mm exhaust JP-8117-0, both with single-groove keepers.
Which valve fits my 1963 Beetle?
The 40 hp 1200 uses the 31.5 mm intake JP-8115-0. Confirm your exhaust size before ordering, because EMPI does not list a matching 40 hp exhaust in this group.
How do I tell 1-groove from 3-groove?
Look at the top of the old valve stem. A single wide groove takes the early keepers. Three narrow grooves take the later keepers.
Is this the same as OE 111 109 601 A?
Yes for JP-8114-0. EMPI and JP Group cross-reference it to 111 109 601 A. The other three cross to 113 109 601 A, 111 109 611 and 043 109 611.
Does it fit a 1600 dual-port Beetle?
Only the 30 mm exhaust JP-8118-0 is listed for 1970–1979. The 1600 dual-port intake is a larger 35.5 mm valve and is not in this group.
How many do I need?
Four intakes and four exhausts for a full set. Many builders replace only the burnt exhausts.
Is it new or used?
New, supplied by JP Group of Denmark through EMPI.
