JP Group New Steering Box (Steering Gear) | VW Super Beetle 1971–1974 | OE 133 415 061 C (JP-8280-0)

Short answer: The JP Group JP-8280-0 is a new steering box (worm-and-roller steering gear) for the 1971–1974 VW Super Beetle, the years before VW switched the Super Beetle to rack-and-pinion. It replaces VW OE 133 415 061 C (JP Group ref. 8144200200). It does not fit standard Beetles or 1975–1979 Super Beetles. Sold each.

What's Included / Not Included

  • Included: One new steering box assembly.
  • Not included: Pitman (drop) arm, tie rods, steering coupler (rag joint), mounting bolts or the steering damper.

Why It Matters

A worn steering box is the usual cause of a Super Beetle that wanders on the freeway, needs constant correction, or has a dead spot and play at the wheel. Boxes also leak oil from the sector shaft seal and develop tight spots. Adjusting a worn box only hides the wear for a while, and good used early Super Beetle boxes are getting scarce. Note the part numbers carefully: the 1971–74 Super Beetle box (133 415 061) is not the same as the standard Beetle box (113 415 061), and the 1975–79 Super Beetle has a rack instead. This JP Group box is a new unit with the correct Super Beetle mounting.

Installation Notes

  • Confirm your car is a 1971–1974 Super Beetle with a steering box, not a rack, before ordering.
  • Mark the steering coupler and pitman arm position before removal so the steering wheel stays centered.
  • Inspect the steering coupler (rag joint), tie rod ends and idler/damper while the box is out; worn linkage will feel like a bad box.
  • Check the box's oil level before installation and top up with the gear oil the workshop manual specifies.
  • Tighten the mounting and pitman arm fasteners to factory specification, then have the front-end alignment checked.
  • We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual for your vehicle.
