What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one rubber oil breather elbow.
- Not included: oil filler neck, air cleaner, clamps.
Why It Matters
The crankcase breather routes oil vapour and blow-by gas from the filler neck into the air cleaner, where the engine burns it. When the elbow cracks or hardens, it lets oil mist spray over the engine bay and lets unfiltered air and dirt get into the intake. A split breather is a common source of the oily film on the fan shroud and the smell of hot oil. A brittle hose can also break as you pull off the air cleaner. A new elbow keeps the crankcase vented the way it should be.
Installation Notes
- Remove the air cleaner, then pull the old elbow off the filler neck outlet.
- Clean any oil sludge from the filler neck vent and the air cleaner inlet.
- Push the new elbow fully onto both stubs. A little rubber-safe lubricant helps.
- Refit the air cleaner and check that the elbow does not kink.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the JP-8169-0 fit my 1974 Super Beetle?
Yes. EMPI lists 1973–1979 Beetles, which includes the Super Beetle.
Will it fit an oil-bath air cleaner?
No. It is for the later paper-element air cleaner.
Is this the same as 113 129 651?
Yes. EMPI lists 113 129 651 as the OE reference for JP-8169-0.
Does it fit a fuel-injected 1977 Beetle?
EMPI includes 1973–1979 Beetles. Fuel-injected cars use a different breather layout on some engines, so compare with your old elbow.
What else do I need?
Usually nothing. Check the filler neck gasket and the air cleaner seals while it is apart.
Is it new?
Yes. It is a new JP Group part, sold each.
