- Engine oil
Why It Matters
On a Type 1 engine, the oil filler cap seals the top of the breather tower. A cap that is bent, rusted or has a hard, flattened seal lets oil mist blow out onto the fan shroud and the generator, coats the engine bay in grime and lets dirt into the crankcase. A loose cap can also pop off and get lost, and an open filler at speed throws oil across the engine. If your engine is always oily around the filler, or the cap spins without gripping, a new cap is the cheapest fix. Many restorers also replace a missing or wrong-looking cap to bring the engine bay back to stock.
Installation Notes
- Wipe the filler neck lip clean so the new seal can seat evenly.
- Press the cap squarely onto the neck. It should grip firmly without forcing.
- If the cap is loose, check the filler neck for a dented or out-of-round lip, and replace the neck if needed.
- Check the oil level with the dipstick, not through the filler, and do not overfill.
