JP Group Piston & Cylinder Set, Cast — VW Vanagon Wasserboxer 1.9 & 2.1 (JP-3156-0 / JP-3157-0 / JP-3158-0)
Short answer: These JP Group CLASSIC sets are cast piston-and-cylinder kits for the water-cooled Wasserboxer engine in the VW Vanagon. JP-3156-0 is the stock-bore 94 mm x 76 mm set for the 2.1 (OE 025 198 075 D). JP-3157-0 is a 95 mm big bore that turns a 1.9 into a 2.0. JP-3158-0 is a 95.5 mm big bore that turns a 2.1 into a 2.2. Each is a set for all four cylinders.
Fitment
| Years | Vehicle / engine | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1986–1991 | VW Vanagon 2.1 Wasserboxer (US MV; also DJ, SS, SR, DP in other markets) | JP-3156-0 stock 94 mm bore, 76 mm stroke; JP-3158-0 95.5 mm big bore to approx. 2.2 L |
| 1983.5–1985 | VW Vanagon 1.9 Wasserboxer (US DH; also DF, DG, GW, SP) | JP-3157-0 95 mm big bore, 69 mm stroke, to approx. 2.0 L |
| 1980–1983 | VW Vanagon air-cooled 2.0 (Type 4) | Does not fit — air-cooled finned cylinders are a different part |
| Any | 1.9 engine with JP-3156-0 or JP-3158-0 | Does not fit — the 2.1 sets use the longer 76 mm stroke cylinder |
| 1992–2003 | VW EuroVan | Does not fit |
Fitment note: EMPI lists JP-3156-0 and JP-3157-0 as "1980–1991 Vanagon". In practice these are Wasserboxer parts (water-cooled 1983.5–1991 only). Match bore and stroke to your engine code before ordering.

Not Included
- Cylinder head gaskets / head gasket set (see our Victor Reinz set JP-1179-0)

Why It Matters
Wasserboxer engines are known for coolant leaks at the heads, corrosion around the cylinder sealing area and worn, oval cylinders on high-mileage engines. Signs that it is time for new cylinders include low compression on one or more cylinders, oil consumption, blue smoke, blow-by from the breather, piston slap when cold, and cylinder walls that are scored or pitted when you take the heads off. Many Vanagon owners rebuilding a tired 1.9 or 2.1 use the opportunity to go up a size for a little more torque. A 95 mm kit on a 1.9 or 95.5 mm on a 2.1 adds a modest amount of displacement with stock-style cast parts, which suits a heavy camper.
Installation Notes
- Check bore, stroke and engine code before ordering. A 2.1 needs the 76 mm-stroke cylinders.
- Have the case and heads measured. Big bore cylinders may need machining to fit.
- Check deck height and compression ratio when assembling. Change only one thing at a time unless a builder has worked out the combination.
- Gap and stagger the rings as the supplier instructs. Lubricate the pistons and bores on assembly.
- Use new head gaskets and seals and follow the Bentley manual for head torque and break-in.
- Go easy on the engine for the first few hundred miles, and change the oil early.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1987 Vanagon 2.1?
Yes. Choose JP-3156-0 for stock bore (94 mm) or JP-3158-0 for the 95.5 mm big bore.
Which one for a 1985 Vanagon 1.9?
JP-3157-0, the 95 mm big bore set with the 69 mm-stroke cylinders. There is no stock-bore 1.9 set in this listing.
Will it fit an air-cooled 1980–1983 Vanagon?
No. These are for the water-cooled Wasserboxer only.
Is JP-3156-0 the same as OE 025 198 075 D?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-3156-0 to 025 198 075 D, the 2.1 piston and cylinder set.
Do I need machine work for the big bore kits?
Possibly. Have the case and heads measured before you order. Many 95 and 95.5 mm installs need the spigot bores opened up.
What else do I need?
A head gasket set, new seals, and usually new head studs or nuts. Check the rods and bearings while the engine is apart.
Is it new and are the pistons forged?
New. The pistons are cast, not forged, which suits a stock-style street engine.
Is it sold as a set?
Yes, a set for all four cylinders.
