Why It Matters
The intermediate shaft is the link between the steering wheel and the rack. Its universal joints wear after decades of use, especially on vans that have sat or seen water and salt. A worn shaft causes a clunk or knock you can feel in the wheel when turning at low speed, free play in the steering, a notchy or binding feel as you turn, or steering that does not return smoothly to center. Some of what owners blame on a worn rack is really a tired intermediate shaft. Because this is a safety-critical part, a loose or seized joint should be replaced, not ignored. New Syncro shafts in particular are getting hard to find in the US.
Installation Notes
- Center the steering wheel and the rack before removing the old shaft, and mark the splines so the wheel stays straight.
- Check that the joint ends and length match your old shaft before final assembly.
- Clean the splines, fit the pinch bolts in the groove, and tighten to the Bentley manual specification.
- Check for free play and smooth rotation lock-to-lock, then road test at low speed before driving normally.
- Get a front-end alignment if the wheel is off center after the job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1988 Vanagon GL with power steering?
Yes, if it is 2WD, choose JP-3149-0. If it is a Syncro, choose JP-3150-0.
2WD or Syncro — how do I tell?
Syncro vans have a front differential, front driveshafts and a "syncro" badge. If your VIN shows a Syncro, order JP-3150-0.
Is this the same as OE 251 422 753 A?
JP-3150-0 cross-references to 251 422 753 A (Syncro). JP-3149-0 cross-references to 251 422 753 (2WD).
Does it fit a van without power steering?
No. Manual-steering Vanagons use a different shaft.
What else do I need?
New pinch bolts and nuts are a good idea. Inspect the rack boot, tie rod ends and column bushings while you are in there.
Is it new or rebuilt?
New JP Group.
Does it fit right-hand-drive vans?
Not confirmed. These are listed for left-hand-drive power steering vans.
