What's Included
- One push rod tube.
Not Included
- Push rod tube seals (two per tube; always replace them)
- Push rods, rocker arms and valve cover gaskets
- Cylinder head nuts and head gaskets
Why It Matters
Push rod tubes carry the push rods between the case and the cylinder head and seal the oil that returns from the heads to the sump. A tube that is dented, rusted through or stretched from an old repair will leak oil onto the heater boxes and the tin, which leads to smoke in the cabin, a dirty engine bay and low oil. A leaking tube is also a fire risk when oil drips onto a hot heat exchanger. OE-style tubes are the correct fix when the heads come off. Adjustable aftermarket tubes are useful for a quick roadside repair, but most builders prefer stock tubes and new seals for a long-lasting seal.
Installation Notes
- Push rod tubes can only be fitted with the cylinder head off or loosened well away from the cylinders.
- Stretch each new tube slightly before fitting so the accordion ends press firmly into the seals. The usual target is a few millimeters longer than the gap; compare with a known-good tube.
- Fit new seals at both ends and coat them lightly with sealant or oil, as your manual recommends.
- Fit the tube seam facing up so oil cannot pool at the seam.
- Torque the head nuts in the factory sequence to the specification in the Bentley manual, then set valve lash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1970 Karmann Ghia?
Yes. EMPI lists JP-8122-0 for the 1962–1974 Ghia, eight per engine.
Does it fit my 1600 Beetle?
EMPI does not list the Beetle, but the 1300–1600 Type 1 engine uses the same tube design. Measure your old tube; it should be about 210 mm.
How many do I need?
Eight per engine. Replace any tube that is dented, rusted or stretched.
Are seals included?
No. Order two new push rod tube seals per tube.
Can I fit these without removing the heads?
No. OE tubes need the head off or pulled back. For an in-car repair, look at collapsible tubes.
Is this the same as the factory part?
It is an OE-style replacement made by JP Group. EMPI lists OE reference 401093553 and JP reference 8111600500.
Is it new?
Yes. New, supplied by JP Group of Denmark through EMPI.
