What's Included
- One 279 mm pushrod.
Not Included
- Push rod tubes or seals
- Lifters or rocker arms
- Valve cover gaskets
Why It Matters
Pushrods carry the cam's motion from the lifters to the rocker arms. A bent or worn pushrod gives a ticking valve that will not hold its lash, a dead cylinder or poor running. A bent rod is common after an over-rev or a stuck valve.
Stock-length pushrods are the right choice for a stock-stroke 1300–1600 rebuild. Replace any rod that is bent, has worn ends or does not roll true on a flat surface.
Installation Notes
- Roll each pushrod on a flat surface. Replace any that are bent.
- Check the ball ends for wear and the oil passage for blockage.
- Fit with the pushrod seated in the lifter and the rocker adjuster.
- Set valve lash to the factory figure with the engine cold.
- Recheck the lash after the first few hundred miles on a fresh engine.
- We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual (Bentley) for your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
Eight per engine. This listing is for one pushrod.
Does it fit my 1972 Super Beetle?
Yes. EMPI lists the 1971–1980 Super Beetle 1300–1600.
Does it fit a 1200 engine?
No. 40 hp 1200 engines use a shorter pushrod.
Is this the same as VW 311 109 301 A?
It is the JP Group replacement listed against OE 311 109 301 A and 043 109 301 A.
Can I use it in a stroker?
Only if the measured length is right. Strokers usually need cut-to-length pushrods.
Is it new?
Yes. New, from JP Group of Denmark, sold through EMPI.
