Why It Matters
The rubber strip on a 1975–1979 Beetle rear bumper is there to take parking knocks. After forty-plus years in the sun most are cracked, shrunk away from the ends, hard as plastic or missing altogether. A shrunk or split strip lets water sit against the bumper and rust starts behind it. A new strip finishes the back of the car and protects the bumper paint or chrome again.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Remove the old strip and all old clips. They usually break; plan on new clips in every hole.
- Clean and treat any rust on the bumper face before fitting.
- Warm the strip in the sun or a warm room so it lies straight.
- Start at the centre, press the strip onto the clips and work out to each end. Soapy water helps.
