What's Included / Not Included

  • Included: one rear crankshaft oil seal.
  • Not included: flywheel O-ring, gland nut, felt washer, flywheel shims or a crankshaft speedi-sleeve. Change the O-ring every time the flywheel comes off.

Why It Matters

A leaking flywheel seal drips oil between the engine and transmission and throws it onto the clutch disc. Signs include oil at the bellhousing drain, a chattering or slipping clutch, and an oil-soaked clutch you replaced not long ago. Because the engine or transmission has to come apart to reach it, fit a new seal whenever the flywheel is off for a clutch job. It is a small part that saves a second teardown.

Installation Notes

  • Check the flywheel sealing surface for a groove. A worn flywheel will leak through a new seal; resurface it or fit a sleeve.
  • Check crankshaft end play while the flywheel is off and set it with the correct shims.
  • Drive the seal in square and flush with the case, lip facing the engine, using a proper driver.
  • Lightly oil the seal lip before fitting the flywheel. Never install it dry.
  • Torque the gland nut to the factory spec for your engine from the workshop manual.
