Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1976–1978 | VW Bus 2.0 Type 4, US model | Per EMPI. Rear muffler section |
| 1979 | VW Bus 2.0 | Not on EMPI's list. Not confirmed |
| 1972–1975 | VW Bus 1700 / 1800 | Not confirmed. Earlier US Buses use different pipes |
| Any | VW Bus with Type 1 engine, Beetle, Vanagon water-cooled | Does not fit |
US-model Buses from 1975 have fuel injection, and many have a catalytic converter, so their exhaust layout differs from European Buses. Compare this pipe with the one on your Bus before you order.

What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one intermediate pipe.
- Not included: gaskets, clamps, nuts, muffler, catalytic converter.
Why It Matters
On a late Bus the pipes between the heat exchangers, converter and muffler rust from the inside out. A rotten intermediate pipe leaks exhaust under the van, upsets the oxygen sensor reading on fuel-injected engines, and can let fumes into the heater air. It is also often the part that snaps when you try to change the muffler. Having a new pipe ready keeps a muffler job from becoming a two-week wait.
Installation Notes
- Soak all flange nuts in penetrating oil ahead of time.
- Use new gaskets at every flange and new clamps or hardware where fitted.
- Assemble the whole system loosely, then tighten from the front back so nothing is stressed.
- Check for leaks and clearance to the body once the engine is hot.
