JP Group Rear Hatch (Tailgate) Seal | VW Bus 1964–1971 (Late Split & Early Bay Window) | OE 211 829 193 (JP-8520-0)
Short answer: JP Group JP-8520-0 is the rubber weatherstrip that seals the large rear hatch (tailgate) on the VW Bus. EMPI lists the 1964–1971 Bus, which covers the big-hatch late Split Window (1964–1967) and the early Bay Window (1968–1971). It replaces OE 211 829 193, JP Group reference 8185502300. Sold each.

Why It Matters
The rear hatch seal keeps exhaust fumes, dust and rain out of the luggage area over the engine. A cracked or flattened seal lets exhaust into the cabin, which you can smell on long drives, and lets water run down into the rear corners, which is a classic rust spot on early Bay and late Split buses. A new seal also stops the hatch rattling and lets the lock latch with a positive click.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Remove the old seal and clean the flange back to clean paint. Treat any rust.
- Warm the seal so it is supple, then start at the bottom centre and press it onto the flange all the way round.
- Glue only where the original was glued.
- Close the hatch gently and check the latch. Adjust the striker if the new seal makes it hard to close.
