JP Group Rear Lower Coil Spring Pad, White Urethane 3 mm — VW Vanagon 1980–1991, OE 251 511 139 (JP-3146-0)
Short answer: JP Group JP-3146-0 is the 3 mm white urethane pad (isolator) that sits under the rear coil spring on the 1980–1991 VW Vanagon. It replaces VW OE 251 511 139 (JP ref 1152501200) and cushions the spring on the trailing-arm spring seat. It fits left or right. Sold each.

What's Included
- One rear lower coil spring pad
Not Included
- Second pad for the other side (order quantity 2)
- Rear coil springs, upper spring pads
- Rear bump stops (see JP-3144-0)
Why It Matters
The lower spring pad sits between the bottom coil of the rear spring and the spring seat on the trailing arm. Original rubber pads harden, crack and wear through after decades. Then the spring rubs bare metal. The result is a creak, squeak or click from the rear over bumps and when the van rolls in and out of driveways. Water and grit also get trapped at the seat, and the trailing arm spring perch rusts, which is a known weak point on Vanagons. A 3 mm urethane pad resists oil, ozone and wear better than plain rubber and keeps ride height close to stock. Replace pads whenever the rear springs are out, and always in pairs.
Installation Notes
- Rear springs are under load. Use proper spring compressors or the factory method, and support the van and trailing arm safely.
- Wire-brush the spring seat and treat any rust before fitting the new pad.
- Line the end of the bottom coil up with the stop in the seat, the same way the old spring sat.
- Fit both sides together. A thick pad on one side and a worn one on the other can make the van lean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1983 Vanagon?
Yes. EMPI lists all 1980–1991 Vanagons, rear.
How many do I need?
Two, one per rear spring. It is sold each.
Left or right?
Either side. Both rear sides use the same pad.
Is this the same as OE 251 511 139?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-3146-0 to 251 511 139.
Will a 3 mm pad change my ride height?
Only slightly. 3 mm is close to a fresh stock pad. It is not a lift kit.
Why urethane instead of rubber?
Urethane lasts longer and resists oil and ozone. The trade-off is that it is a little firmer than rubber.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group.
