What's Included
- One inner quarter window seal / retaining frame for one side.
Not Included
- A second seal for the other side (order two for both windows).
- Quarter window glass, outer quarter window rubber, chrome trim or locking strip.
Why It Matters
The rear quarter windows on a 356 coupe sit in rubber that holds the glass in the body opening and seals it against water and wind. After 60-plus years the original rubber shrinks, cracks and goes hard. Water then runs down inside the rear quarter panel and into the area under the rear seat and the battery box, which is a well known rust spot on these cars. A shrunken seal also lets the glass rattle and lets wind noise into the cabin. If you are restoring the body or have the glass out for paint, this is the time to fit new seals.
JP Group is a Danish supplier that has specialised in classic Volkswagen and Porsche parts for decades, and EMPI distributes the range in the USA. Many 356 parts are hard to find in the US; we list this one with its real OE and JP numbers so you can match it to your car.
Installation Notes
- Remove the interior trim around the quarter window to reach the inner seal.
- Take the glass out carefully. Old glass can be fragile, and replacement glass is expensive.
- Clean the body flange and treat any rust before fitting the new seal.
- Warm the new seal so it is soft. Fit it to the glass first, then use a cord in the seal lip to pull it over the body flange.
- Follow the factory workshop manual, or have a body shop that knows 356 glass fit the part.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1958 356A coupe?
Yes. EMPI lists the 356A 1955–1959, rear left and right.
Left or right?
Either. EMPI lists the same part for the rear left and rear right quarter window. Order two for both sides.
Is this the same as OE 644 543 905 00?
Yes. EMPI lists 644 543 905 00 as the OE reference and JP Group 1686000400 as the maker's number.
Does it fit a Cabriolet, Speedster or Roadster?
Not confirmed. This seal is for the fixed rear quarter window of the coupe. Open cars use different parts.
Is it the outer seal?
No. EMPI describes it as the inner quarter window seal (retaining frame). The outer rubber is a separate part.
Does it fit a Karmann-built 356C coupe?
Not confirmed. Some suppliers say Karmann coupes differ, so compare your old seal before ordering.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group part.
