Why It Matters
Vanagons, and Westfalias in particular, run heavy at the back. Over the years the rear bump stops harden, crack or fall off. Then the trailing arm hits metal on big bumps, dips and driveway ramps. Common symptoms are a hard bang or clunk from the rear over potholes, a harsh ride when the van is loaded, and shiny contact marks on the trailing arm or body where the stop should be. A missing bump stop also lets the CV joints and shocks go past their normal travel, which shortens their life. Fit new stops when you do rear springs or shocks, or whenever the old ones are cracked or gone.
Installation Notes
- Support the van on stands and take the weight off the rear suspension before working near the springs.
- Clean the mounting point and remove any old rubber left behind.
- A little rubber-safe lubricant or soapy water helps the new stop seat fully.
- Replace both sides together so the rear stays even.
