Why It Matters
The rear window seal is one of the Beetle's most common leak points. After decades of sun the rubber shrinks and hardens, water runs between the glass and the rubber and drips onto the rear seat shelf and the battery under the rear seat, where it rusts the floor and the battery tray. Replacing the seal when the car is painted or the glass is out stops the leak and makes the trim sit straight again.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Fit the trim into the seal first, or after the glass is in with a trim tool; either way works, but trim-first is easier for beginners.
- Fit the seal to the glass and run a cord in the body-side groove.
- Set the glass in the opening and pull the cord from inside while a helper presses gently from outside.
- Use soapy water, never oil or grease, to help the rubber slide.
