Why It Matters
The angled roof antenna is a signature detail of the 1980s Golf GTI 16V, and original ones are now often broken, bent, chalky or missing. A damaged mast or a corroded base gives weak, noisy FM reception, and a cracked base gasket lets water into the headliner, leaving stains or wet carpets. A fresh antenna with a new lead restores reception and keeps the roof sealed. It is also a common finishing touch for anyone restoring a Mk2 GTI or Jetta GLI to original.
Installation Notes
- Lower the front of the headliner or remove the dome light area to reach the antenna nut and lead.
- Clean the roof around the hole and remove any rust before fitting the new base, so the gasket seals and the ground contact is good.
- Route the lead down the A-pillar to the radio, avoiding sharp edges and airbag areas on later cars.
- Check reception before refitting the trim.
- On cars without a hole, mark carefully and treat the bare metal with primer before fitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1990 Golf GTI 16V?
Yes. EMPI lists the 1987–1991 Golf GTI 16-Valve.
Will it fit my Jetta?
If your Mk2 Jetta has the factory roof antenna hole, it should fit. Compare it with your old base. Otherwise drilling is needed.
Is this the same as Z 051 857?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-3154-0 to Z 051 857.
Is it amplified?
No. It is a manual (passive) antenna, like the original.
Does it come with the cable?
Yes, it comes with the lead.
Will it stop my roof leak?
A new base gasket stops leaks at the antenna. Also check the sunroof drains if your car has a sunroof.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group.
