What's Included / Not Included
- JP-8405-0 / JP-8406-0: one running board with fitted 9 mm molding and mounting hardware.
- JP-8407-0: running board set with 9 mm and 18 mm molding and mounting bolts, nuts and washers (per EMPI).
- Not included: fender beading (welting) or paint.
Why It Matters
Beetle running boards take a beating: they are stood on, scraped on curbs and constantly wet underneath. The steel base rusts through from the bottom, the rubber tread cracks and lifts, and the mounting bolts seize in the heater channel. A sagging or broken running board also lets water and grit spray into the heater channel seam, which is the start of serious rust.
New boards with fresh molding and hardware tidy up the whole side of the car and close the gap between the fenders and the body. Because the hardware is included, you avoid hunting for odd bolts and the cup washers that hold the board to the body.
Molding width is how you tell the years apart: 33 mm up to 1966, 18 mm for 1967–1972 and the narrow 9–10 mm molding for 1973–1979.
Installation Notes
- Soak the old bolts in penetrating oil the day before; the body-side bolts thread into the heater channel and seize.
- Remove the fender bolts that pass through the running board ends, then the body bolts along the heater channel.
- Clean and treat the heater channel flange before fitting the new board.
- Fit new fender beading at the same time for a clean seal between fender, board and body.
- Start all bolts by hand before tightening so the board sits flat without twisting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1976 Beetle?
Yes. EMPI lists the JP running boards for 1973–1979 Beetle and 1973–1980 Super Beetle.
Left or right — how do I tell?
Left is the driver side on a US car (JP-8405-0). Right is the passenger side (JP-8406-0).
Is JP-8407-0 a pair of boards?
EMPI sells JP-8407-0 as a "set" for left and right with 9 and 18 mm molding, but it does not state the board count. Contact us before ordering if you need to confirm.
9 mm or 10 mm molding?
Same thing. JP Group lists 9 mm; most US sellers call the 1973–1979 molding 10 mm.
Is hardware included?
Yes. All three part numbers include mounting hardware per EMPI.
Will these fit a 1970 Beetle?
The board fits the body, but 1967–1972 cars used 18 mm molding. The JP-8407-0 set includes 18 mm molding.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group parts.
