Why It Matters
The bellows protect the shift rod bushing. When the rubber splits, dirt gets in, the bushing wears and the Vanagon shifter gets sloppy and vague.
Heritage notes that two bellows are used per vehicle on these vans. They cost little, so replace both when the linkage is apart.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model, chassis number and engine code and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Mark the linkage before taking it apart.
- Fit the new boot over the bushing and secure it with its flange.
- A little silicone grease helps the boot slide on.
- Test all gears before driving.
Use the torque values and procedures in a factory or Bentley service manual for your car.
