What's Included
- One early shift rod coupler
Not Included
- Coupler bolts and safety wire
- Shift rod bushing and boot
Why It Matters
The coupler has rubber that wears out and goes soft. The shifter then feels sloppy, the pattern wanders and gears pop out. A worn coupler is one of the most common causes of bad shifting on early VWs.
Washburn's Metal also sells billet couplers from King Performance. This JP Group coupler is the OE-style replacement for a stock feel.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model, chassis number and engine code and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Mark the coupler on the rod and selector shaft before removal so the pattern stays the same.
- Use new coupler bolts and lock them with safety wire.
- Check the shift rod bushing at the front of the tunnel too.
- Test all gears with the engine off.
Use the torque values and procedures in a factory or Bentley service manual for your car.
