What's Included / Not Included
- Included: One steering column shear bolt.
- Not included: Steering column clamp, lock housing, ignition switch or nuts.
Why It Matters
VW used shear bolts on the steering column so the column and steering lock can't be easily unbolted by a thief. The head snaps off once the bolt is tight, so the bolt cannot be reused. Anyone removing the column to replace the ignition switch, steering lock, column bearings or the column itself has to drill or cut the old bolts and needs new ones to put it back the factory way. Many vans have been put back together with random hardware store bolts; these restore the correct part.
Installation Notes
- Remove old shear bolts by drilling the head or cutting a slot and using a screwdriver or extractor.
- Position the column correctly and check the steering lock and switch work before final tightening.
- Tighten the new bolt until the head shears off; do not use an impact gun.
- Two bolts are used per van, so order a pair.
- Disconnect the battery before working around the ignition switch wiring.
- We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual for your vehicle.
