What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one muffler.
- Not included: tail pipes (two needed, 113 251 163 G style), tail pipe clamps, muffler installation kit, EGR pipe or filter, heat exchangers.
Why It Matters
On an EGR Beetle the muffler is not just a silencer. It also supplies the exhaust gas the EGR valve meters back into the intake. A muffler without the right EGR port leaves the EGR system disconnected, which can mean a failed smog check and pinging on a lean engine. A rusted muffler also leaks fumes into the heater air. Fitting the correct EGR-type muffler keeps the car stock and the heater safe.
Installation Notes
- Note how the EGR pipe and the pre-heat connections are routed before you take the old muffler off.
- Use new gaskets at the heat exchangers and pre-heat tube, and a fresh muffler installation kit.
- Hang the muffler loosely, connect the EGR pipe without forcing it, then tighten everything from the heads back.
- Fit new tail pipes and clamps, then check for leaks with the engine hot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which one fits my 1974 Beetle?
JP-8189-0 if your car has an EGR valve and uses the 113 251 053 AQ muffler. JP-8190-0 is the US-model version with the EGR connecting hole. Compare the EGR connection on your old muffler.
How do I know if my Beetle has EGR?
Look for the EGR valve on the intake manifold and a metal pipe running from the muffler area up to it.
Is JP-8189-0 the same as OE 113 251 053 AQ?
Yes. EMPI lists 113 251 053 AQ as the OE reference.
What else do I need?
Two tail pipes, two tail pipe clamps and a muffler installation kit.
Will it fit a car without EGR?
It is built for EGR engines. For a non-EGR 1600, use JP-8188-0 or the complete kit JP-8173-0.
Is it new?
Yes. Both are new mufflers, sold each.
