What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one rear muffler.
- Not included: tail pipe (see JP-8197-0), tail pipe gasket, heat-exchanger-to-muffler gaskets, fitting kit, EGR pipe, catalytic converter.
Why It Matters
The Type 4 Bus muffler hangs across the back of the engine and takes heat, water and salt. When it rusts, the Bus drones, loses power and can pull exhaust into the heater air through cracked joints. On US EGR Buses, the EGR pipe also takes its gas from the exhaust, so the wrong muffler leaves the EGR system disconnected. Fitting the right stock muffler keeps the Bus quiet, legal and safe to heat.
Installation Notes
- Soak the heat-exchanger flange nuts and the tail-pipe bolts with penetrating oil well ahead of time.
- Use new heat-exchanger-to-muffler gaskets and a new tail pipe gasket.
- Hang the muffler on its straps loosely, start all nuts, then tighten evenly so the flanges seal flat.
- On EGR versions, connect the EGR pipe without forcing it. Check for leaks with the engine hot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which one fits my 1975 Bus?
If it has an EGR valve (most US 1974–79 Buses do), JP-8193-0. Without EGR, JP-8192-0.
How do I know if my Bus has EGR?
Look for the EGR valve near the intake and a metal pipe running from the exhaust to it.
Is JP-8192-0 the same as OE 021 251 053 D?
Yes. EMPI lists 021 251 053 D as the OE reference.
Does it fit a Type 1 1600 Bus?
No. Type 1 and Type 4 exhausts are not interchangeable.
Does it fit my 1984 Vanagon?
EMPI lists 1983–1985 Vanagon fitment for JP-8192-0, but its data is cut off. Compare with your old muffler or call us.
What else do I need?
A tail pipe, a tail pipe gasket and the heat-exchanger gaskets.
Is it new?
Yes. Both are new mufflers, sold each.
