JP Group Tail Light Plug Connector Boot — VW Vanagon 1980–1991, OE 251 971 867 (JP-3153-0)
Short answer: JP Group JP-3153-0 is the rubber boot (cap) that covers the wiring plug on the back of each tail light on the 1980–1991 VW Vanagon. It replaces VW OE 251 971 867 (JP ref 1195354000) and keeps water and road spray off the plug and terminals. It fits left or right. Sold each.

Why It Matters
The Vanagon tail light gets its power through a multi-pin plug at the back of the light housing, inside the rear corner of the body. A rubber boot covers the plug to seal it. With age the boot cracks, shrinks or goes missing. Then moisture gets into the plug and the terminals corrode. The symptoms are familiar to many Vanagon owners. Brake lights, turn signals or running lights flicker or stop working on one side. A bulb glows dimly. The wrong light comes on when you brake (a ground fault). Or the light works only after you wiggle the plug. A corroded tail light plug is also a common cause of turn signals that flash fast or not at all. Cleaning the terminals and fitting a new boot is a cheap and lasting fix.
Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery before working on the light wiring.
- Unplug the connector and clean the terminals with contact cleaner and a small brush. Replace any that are badly corroded.
- A light coat of dielectric grease on the terminals helps keep moisture out.
- Slide the new boot over the plug so it seals all the way around, then test every light.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1990 Vanagon Carat?
Yes. EMPI lists it for every 1979–1992 Vanagon / Transporter.
Left or right?
Either. The same boot fits both tail lights.
How many do I need?
One per tail light, so two for both sides.
Is this the same as OE 251 971 867?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-3153-0 to 251 971 867.
My brake light flickers. Will this fix it?
Maybe. If the plug is corroded, cleaning the terminals and fitting a new boot often cures it. Also check the bulb, the socket and the ground.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group rubber.
