JP Group Westfalia Pop-Top Roof Latch (Soft Top Lock) — VW EuroVan Camper 1992–2003 (JP-8731-0)
Short answer: JP Group JP-8731-0 is a replacement latch (lock) for the Westfalia pop-up soft-top roof on the 1992–2003 VW EuroVan camper and the 1991–1994 European T4 Transporter Westfalia. It replaces VW OE 701 070 713 (JP Group ref 1185450400), holds the lowered roof down while driving, and is sold individually.
Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1992–2003 | VW EuroVan with Westfalia pop-top (Camper, Weekender / MV Weekender) | Roof latch for the Westfalia soft-top roof, per EMPI |
| 1991–1994 | VW Transporter T4 Westfalia (Europe / ROW) | Same latch, listed by EMPI as "Westfalia soft top roof" |
| 1980–1991 | VW Vanagon Westfalia | Does not fit — Vanagon pop-tops use different over-center roof latches |
| 1968–1979 | VW Bay Window Bus Westfalia | Does not fit |
| 2004+ | VW T5 / T6 California | Does not fit — different roof system |
Fitment note: T4-based Westfalia and California roofs used more than one latch over the years (later T4 roofs list other part numbers such as 191 823 507). Compare your old latch with the photo before ordering, or send us your VIN and roof type and we will check.

What's Included
- One new Westfalia pop-top roof latch
Not Included
- Mounting screws or rivets (reuse originals or buy new hardware)
- Roof canvas, roof seal or lift struts
Why It Matters
The pop-top latch is what keeps the roof clamped down on the body seal at highway speed. Old latches crack, wear at the pivot or lose spring tension. Then the roof rattles, the front edge lifts in a headwind, rain gets past the seal, and in the worst case the roof can open at speed. If your latch no longer snaps closed firmly, the plastic housing is broken, or you have to push on the roof to make it catch, it is time to replace it. A new latch is a small part that protects an expensive roof and canvas. If one latch is worn, check the other side too.
Installation Notes
- With the roof down and closed, mark the position of the old latch and its striker so the new one lines up the same way.
- Remove the old latch screws or drill out rivets carefully so you do not enlarge the holes in the roof shell.
- Fit the new latch, then test it several times with the roof closed: it should pull the roof down evenly onto the seal and release cleanly.
- Adjust the striker if the latch closes too loose or too hard.
- Inspect the roof seal and lift struts at the same time; a weak strut puts extra load on the latches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1997 EuroVan Camper?
EMPI lists 1992–2003 EuroVan with the Westfalia roof. Because T4 roofs used more than one latch, compare your old latch with the photo first.
Does it fit my Vanagon Westfalia?
No. Vanagon pop-tops use different roof latches.
Is this the same as OE 701 070 713?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-8731-0 to VW 701 070 713.
Is it sold as a pair?
No, it is sold each. Order two if both latches need replacing.
What else do I need?
New screws or rivets if the old ones are corroded. Check the roof seal and lift struts while you work.
Is it new or used?
New JP Group part supplied through EMPI.
