Why It Matters
A Karmann Ghia windshield is a strongly curved, wide piece of glass, and after decades of wipers, sand and stone chips most originals are pitted, scratched or cracked from the corners. A chipped screen glares badly at night and will not pass inspection in many states. New Ghia screens are not stocked by most glass shops, so a correct new screen that matches the original size saves a long search.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches, sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, with EMPI as its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW OE number and JP Group reference so you can check it against your parts book before you order.
Installation Notes
- Have a glass shop or an experienced helper fit it. The curve and size make it easy to crack if forced.
- Check the frame for rust and dents before fitting; a high spot can crack new glass.
- Fit a new seal to the glass, run a cord in the body groove, and pull it in from inside while a helper presses gently.
- Fit the trim last, and test for leaks with a gentle hose before refitting the dash trim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1969 Karmann Ghia coupe?
Yes. EMPI lists the 1956–1974 Karmann Ghia.
Does it fit my Ghia convertible?
Heritage lists the same OE number for coupe and convertible. Compare with your old glass if the car has been modified.
Is this the same as OE 143 845 101 C?
Yes. EMPI lists JP-8500-0 against 143 845 101 C.
Is it tinted?
No, it is clear.
Does it come with the rubber seal?
No. Buy a new seal; an old seal is the usual cause of leaks and cracked glass.
Is it new and street legal?
Yes, new and E-marked safety glass.
