Why It Matters
Rod bearings carry the full firing load of each piston. Once a crank has been reground, only matching undersize bearings give the correct oil clearance. The wrong size means low oil pressure, knocking and a spun bearing.
KS / Kolbenschmidt is an original-equipment German bearing maker, and this set is the right size for a crank ground 0.50 mm under. JP Group is a Danish parts supplier that packs engine internals from the big German makers (MAHLE, KS / Kolbenschmidt) for classic VW engines, sold in the US through EMPI. Washburn's Metal in Orange, CA lists each one with its VW OE number and JP reference so you can match it to your engine.
Installation Notes
- Measure the crank rod journals and confirm they are 0.50 mm under before ordering.
- Fit shells with the locating tangs in the rod notches; keep the backs clean and dry.
- Check oil clearance with Plastigage or a bore gauge.
- Lubricate the bearing faces with assembly lube and torque rod nuts to the VW spec.
