Why It Matters
Worn pistons and cylinders show up as blue smoke, oil use, low compression and blow-by. On an air-cooled VW the cylinders are separate, so a top-end rebuild replaces all four with a matched set.
MAHLE is an original-equipment supplier for VW pistons, and this is the stock 1600 size, so no case or head machining is needed on a 1600 engine. JP Group is a Danish parts supplier that packs engine internals from the big German makers (MAHLE, KS / Kolbenschmidt) for classic VW engines, sold in the US through EMPI. Washburn's Metal in Orange, CA lists each one with its VW OE number and JP reference so you can match it to your engine.
Installation Notes
- Check deck height and use the correct cylinder base shims to set compression.
- Gap and orient the rings per MAHLE instructions.
- Fit wrist-pin clips with the gap away from the slot and check both clips on every piston.
- Torque the heads in stages to the VW spec and break in the engine as MAHLE advises.
