Why It Matters
The 2.0 Type 4 in a late Bay Window Bus or early Vanagon works hard, and worn pistons and cylinders show up as oil burning, low compression and a tired, smoky engine. Because air-cooled cylinders are separate, the rebuild uses a new matched set of four.
This MAHLE set is the factory 2.0 size, so it drops onto a stock 2.0 case and heads. JP Group is a Danish parts supplier that packs engine internals from the big German makers (MAHLE, KS / Kolbenschmidt) for classic VW engines, sold in the US through EMPI. Washburn's Metal in Orange, CA lists each one with its VW OE number and JP reference so you can match it to your engine.
Installation Notes
- Check deck height and set it with the correct base shims.
- Gap and orient the rings per MAHLE instructions.
- Check both wrist-pin clips on every piston.
- Torque the heads in stages to the VW spec and break the engine in as MAHLE advises.
